THE NORTH FACE 100 (Jane Kilkenny)

For a runner TNF100 is the ultimate challenge. This event is more than a run, it's a snapshot of life.

In less than 20 hours I experienced all facets of the human emotion from excited anticipation to the depths of frustration, desperately wanting to give it all up. You have to dig deep to get over this finish line.

I've always been a runner, it's an integral part of who I am. I love to run, it always makes me feel good and is the ultimate freedom. It's time to think, solve problems, make plans or simply drift along in your own head space.

The “Ultimate Challenge” is what drew me to TNF100. More than just a physical challenge, this event is all about mental toughness. Finding the will to keep going when you look up to see ANOTHER SET OF STEPS!!!  I never dreamed there could be so many stairs in the Blue Mountains.

The course is breathtaking, but excruciating. Who could ever imagine that you could have SO MUCH FUN whilst being in so much pain!

I laughed, I cried, I screamed out when I knew no-one could hear me and there were plenty of times when I just wanted to stop. BUT quitting is not an option I ever choose, and I am determined it never will be.

So if you have ever truly wondered what you are capable of give TNF100 a go. Not for the feint hearted, cautious or indecisive.  You need to grab this with both hands and fight to the end. I guarantee you will be totally exhilarated by the experience.

The following article appeared in “Run for Your Life” magazine, issue #15.

RUNNING FOR A CAUSE
“1000 KILOMETRES AND $10,000 IN 24 HOURS” THAT WAS THE TARGET AND THERE WERE PLENTY OF PEOPLE WHO SAID IT COULDN'T BE DONE - I KNEW WE COULD.

I've always been a runner with a steely determination, (some say stubborn), so I set about organizing the Fitness Energy 24 Hour Treadmill Challenge for Very Special Kids, a Melbourne based charity who support the families of children with life threatening illnesses.

So with over 150 willing participants, six Johnson treadmills and a healthy dose of enthusiasm off we went.  I had personally set myself a target of 100km, (once again stubborn or pigheaded, not sure which) but I was determined we would meet all of our targets.

With six treadmills running constantly for 24 hours we still needed to average 7km per hour on every treadmill so we needed to keep them going constantly with a mix of walkers and runners.
I was totally amazed by the overwhelming level of enthusiasm from everyone involved.

Even though we had pre-booked times on the treadmills we still had people lining up to participate.  The studio was simply buzzing!!  We had several generous local sponsors who supported our  event but everyone involved made generous donations to the big pink pig.

So after 24 hours we had completed 1048 kilometres and raised over $10,000 for Very Special Kids!  This event was truly an amazing experience for us all and goes to prove that with a bit of determination we can achieve unbelievable results.

People keep asking me if we will do it again next year, without hesitation the answer is easy, ABSOLUTELY!!
